Tolar Grande is a cultural-rich town set in the heart of the Puna Salteña. From Salta City we will drive 357 km across the Quebrada del Toro and San Antonio de Cobres town.
Tolar Grande is placed at 3,500 meters above the sea level, and has 4 different walking circuits to visit:
Ojos de Mar: located at 4 km from town. Along the way we can see native high Andean plateau flora and fauna, sweet water springs, and we can take a walk on the Tolar Grande salt flat.
El Arenal: located at 3 km from town. For this circuit is necessary to hire a local guide and a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. From here we can trek to the highest points, where the altitude sickness resistance will be put to test.
El Mirador: hills made of salt and gypsum banks can be seen during the excursion. From the view point we can observe the Salar de Arizaro, one of the longest salt flats worldwide, and the surrounding volcanoes: Llullaillaco (the king of the Andean plateau), Socompa, Arizaro, Arecar, and Macón, among others.
Túnel del Hombre Muerto (Dead Man’s Tunnel): located at 13 km from town. It’s a 2-hour walk or half an hour car ride. This is a 180-meter long tunnel with four interior vaults, with stalactites and salt columns in the inside.
There are also longer excursions available in Tolar Grande: Laguna Santa Maria, with stunning pink flamingos, Cono de Arita, a sacred hill set on the southern part of the Salar de Arizaro, Volcán Socompa, with a peak of 6,000 meters above the sea level, or one of the most sacred volcanoes in the plateau, the mythic Volcán Llullaillaco, the highest archeological site in the world.
